A Riverbend High School parent had apparently requested, and then often praised, a coach's mentoring of their student-athlete. When a leadership model changed, however, so did the parent's tone.
A big thanks to the Advance for writing this article. It is a shame that VHSL does not adhere to the Safe Sport standards adopted by a majority of national sports groups including USA Swimming. Safe Sport has many resources including extensive training for athletes, parents, coaches and officials. Much of this could have been avoided with clear direction on communication between coaches and athletes. My heart goes out to the entire swim team being placed in the middle of this unfortunate set of circumstances.
Policy exceptions to the open and transparent requirement for e-communications (e.g., texts) include a "dual-relationship" exception: "Dual Relationship – The Adult Participant has an existing relationship with Minor Athlete outside of the sport program."
Look forward to hearing additional details if/when they come to light.
Still, based upon what I read here, that's some squirmy stuff from the parent. These theocrats seem fine with things as long as they can be in charge. Don't like it too well if folks decide to go another route.
Shame for the other 40+ kids in the program, but the coach seems wise to have stepped away.
Might want to be careful what accusations and disparagements you throw around about this guy, though. Don't seem like he's the type to tolerate a bunch of reindeer games. And if what has been reported so far is accurate, doesn't look like he did anything wrong.
On a side bet, I've got the theocratic university in question as Liberty. Could be another, but it sure does feel right, IMO.
On another side bet, sure does have shades of Loudon County, doesn't it? Wonder if either Youngkin or Miyares will manage to step into the middle of it if it plays well on Fox, Sinclair, or OAN?
Responsible journalism on a matter of public importance. Pure 1st A.
