The amount of power required to fuel a data center is difficult for most people to wrap their heads around. Bruce Saller provides a look at the numbers, and things we can all do to help lower them.
As always, Mr. Saller brings clarity to an issue that is concerning us all. Coal plants that are slated for closure next year are now being reinstated due to the excessive energy use of data centers. We are headed for the next mass extinction, yet these developers and areas that continue to allow them to go forward on the backs (financial costs) of the citizens while they rake in billions of dollars at the cost of our children's and grandchildren's futures.
I appreciate the tips on lowering our use of data!
Why can't the data center developers pay for the construction of the electrical infrastructure needed for the electricity which their machines will require rather than ratepayers, i.e. the rest of us? And why can't it be solar or other non-polluting fuels?
Yes. Make them be "pay as you go." We force traditional developers (housing, commercial) to pay or provide proffers--cash; infrastructure--so why give Bezos a pass.
Thank you, Bruce. Your articles are always of interest. No worries. I'm certain Bezos will sell some of his $500 million property portfolio (according to Architectural Digest,) to provide water and electricity for our area - As if!!

Great article. Thanks for exposing the myth that data centers are the be-all, end-all for localities, states, etc.
